STEAM Books for Younger Kids

At-Home Supplemental Ideas

It is not a secret that I love books. I love reading them (to myself and others). I love making things with them (My Christmas tree was made of books last year). I love books!  But I also love what books can inspire others to do. There are books that promote critical and creative thinking while inspiring a growth mindset! This is why I wanted to let you in on a secret: there are STEAM books that are just for Preschoolers! If you do not know what STEAM is, it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math and is an amazing way to get our kids thinking critically about the world around them!

I wanted to share my favorite STEAM authors and books that are focused towards a younger audience.

My favorite books are all by the same author, Andrea Beaty:

  • Iggy Peck, Architect
  • Rosie Revere, Engineer
  • Ada Twist, Scientist

Each book focuses on a student in the same second grade classroom, but each student has different dreams and aspirations. Iggy wants to build, Rosie wants to invent, and Ada wants to think. Each are thought of as quite odd, and as a result, almost give up on their dreams. But, in the end, they are supported in being different, encouraged to fail and try again, and to build! These books are a dream come true to most kids who don't have characters they can relate to… and did I mention, they rhyme! They are fun to read and there is always something new to find in the illustrations that connect to the other books by Beaty.

My favorite thing about these books is that they say it is okay to fail, as long as you try again and learn from your mistakes! And isn't that what growth mindset and critical thinking is all about?

If you are interested in these titles, they are in the Brookridge Day School Library, proudly donated by myself last year!
